C.F. Sauer Foods is a wholly owned subsidiary of The C.F. Sauer Company, based in Richmond, Virginia. In 1887 Conrad Frederick Sauer founded the first company in the country to provide pure flavoring extracts in five- and ten-gram cartoned bottles. The company grew rapidly so that by 1927, The C.F. Sauer Company had become the largest producer of extracts and spices in the nation.
By 1929 the Sauer Company had purchased Duke's Products Company of Greenville, South Carolina, the maker of Duke's Mayonnaise since 1917. This added the production of mayonnaise, sandwich spreads, and salad dressings, which has remained a best-selling mainstay of The C.F. Sauer Company.
Business during the Depression and World War II required dealing with the extremes of a changing world and national markets. C.F. Sauer, Jr. made the decision to sell at a close margin of profit while increasing the tonnage of products sold. This has remained the philosophy of The C.F. Sauer Company.
The 1950s saw a major addition to the company's manufacturing plant in Greenville, South Carolina and an expanded product line that included the addition of the Gold Medal line of spices, condiments, and salad dressings.
By 1984 it became evident that C.F. Sauer Foods needed to become a separate entity to make formulas and flavorings for commercial users. This division has established itself as a high quality, low cost producer of mayonnaise, salad dressings, sauces, spices, seasonings, and extracts. While the company is the proud maker of Duke's and Sauer's branded products, its strength in foodservice is developing and packing products that meet its customer's specifications as well as offering competitive alternatives to most national brands.
C.F. Sauer IV became the 4th generation Sauer to hold the president's post when he took over that position in 1993. Under his watchful gaze, the company has continued expansion with an eye on continued future growth. Two manufacturing plants have been added in the western half of the United States. A spice plant in California was purchased and a state-of-the art multi-purpose facility was built in Kansas. At the same time, the original Duke's manufacturing plant in South Carolina has been upgraded, enlarged and automated.
With an expertise forged over four generations of the Sauer family and 124 years, The C.F. Sauer Company offers quality, service, value, and confidence in its ability to be among our customer's most trusted suppliers.
